  • Miss Serena's Secret | carolynmillerauthor

Christian Regency romance inspired by Jane Austen MISS SERENA'S SECRET ~ Book 2 in the Regency Brides: Promise of Hope series Scarred by her past, Serena Winthrop is determined to protect her heart - especially from flirts like the too smooth Viscount Carmichael. But when forced to share his roof, she discovers another side to the man who gambles with women's hearts as he does their husband's money. Henry, Lord Carmichael, struggles with the weight of his Derbyshire's family's expectations, until he finds a hope shared by the too perceptive, too young artist. But he's promised to protect his best friend's innocent sister-in-law, not charm her, much to his - and her - private dismay. When her art leads her to London infamy, he's forced to choose between the life mapped out for him, and the love of his life, with whom marriage might prove the end of his family line. Christian Regency romance inspired by Jane Austen and Georgette Heyer NOW AVAILABLE DAWN'S UNTRODDEN GREEN ~ Book 3 in the Regency Wallflowers series Not much happens in Theodosia Stapleton's tiny Northumberland village. Certainly not to her. She has resigned herself to spinsterhood, caring for her ailing mother in the home of her grandfather, known to the locals as "General Contrary." When her dear friend dies and leaves behind a daughter, it's simple enough to take the child into her own quiet world. That is, until her ward's famous uncle unexpectedly arrives and throws Theo's tidy orbit completely off-kilter. Fame was the last thing Daniel Balfour sought when he fought in the Peninsular War. But his brave exploits caught the attention of the King, and now the honors he was given hound him everywhere . . . even on his rushed trip to rescue his orphaned niece. Theo's quick wit and warm smile reassure him that Rebecca is in good hands, and he finds himself free to swiftly return to London and his responsibilities. But those caring hands are beginning to look like they could also safely hold his heart, and he's tempted to linger. Unfortunately, marriage is simply not in the cards; the army is spouse enough for him. Then an accident and a scandal lead both Theo and Daniel to discover that their best-laid plans may not have been what God designed for them after all. But Jordan’s feelings have grown from friendship to more. He determines to protect her by exposing Eric Churchill for the two-timer he is, finally agreeing to attend a function with her at the Sydney Opera House. BUY NOW OCTOBER 2026 Two sisters travel to the Blue Mountains and meet two men then discover that the path to real love doesn't always follow one's hope & dreams PREORDER NOW Jane Austen in my Fiction I love a good romance, especially those penned by Jane Austen 200 years ago, with their stories of family, friendships, and love. And with over 4000 titles on Amazon referencing Mr Darcy in their titles, it seems that plenty of others agree. For my first historical, The Elusive Miss Ellison , I wanted to lean into the Pride and Prejudice vibes, so I created a small English village with Mr Darcy and Elizabeth Bennett-like characters, with wit and banter. Jane Austen's Persuasion was my inspiration for another historical, Winning Miss Winthrop - they even go to Bath, and experience a masquerade ball. Austen fans love these books! I've also written lots of contemporary romances, such as a romcom Daring Mr Darcy , which sets the plot of Pride and Prejudice in small-town USA. And for my new Silver Teapot series, I've created the Bennett sisters and their parents who run a teashop in a small Australian town - which is based on my home town! Each sister has her own Austen-inspired story, such as Olivia in Not Exactly Mr Darcy (inspired by Pride and Prejudice) , matchmaker app designer EJ who stars in Not Precisely Mr Knightley (Emma), and Ellie & Katie who feature in Not So Very Sensible ( Sense & Sensibility ), out later this year. I'm loving that fans love the Austen references - I hope you do too! But wait! Before you go: I have a number of Austen-inspired books including Daring Mr Darcy and The Breakup Project (which features an Austen-obsessed heroine). Find out some more of the interesting information including a Trip to Bath and the Independence Islands series INTERESTING INFORMATION Click to access downloadable book list ^ The Royal Pavilion, Brighton. A magnificent, exotic structure used as the Regent's summer holiday residence, for entertaining on a sumptuous scale. Mentioned in 'The Dishonorable Miss DeLancey' ^ 12th Century Church of St Mary & Holy Cross, Alderminster, 4 miles south of Stratford-upon-Avon. During the Regency period, the church helped govern social mores - even if not everybody practiced what was preached. Men of faith, such as William Wilberforce helped change society for the better, such as petitioning for the end of slavery. The Regency Era Th e Regency era refers specifically to the years 1811-1820 when the Prince Regent (later King George IV) was ruling in place of his father, King George III, who was deemed mad and unfit to rule. The Regency is a sub-period of the Georgian era (from 1714-1837, when a series of kings named George ruled England), which preceded the advent of Queen Victoria to the throne in 1837. The Regency era is known for: *the continued wars in the Peninsular against France * for the exploits of the Duke of Wellington * Jane Austen's 'Pride and Prejudice' (published in 1813) * Mary Shelley's 'Frankenstein' (published in 1816) * 'Ivanhoe' by Walter Scott (published in 1819). It was a time of excess (such as the extravagances of the Royal Pavilion in Brighton), adventure and exploration ('Elgin's marbles' - Greek artefacts brought to London by Lord Elgin - were first displayed at the British Museum in 1817), and social upheaval, such as the Luddite uprisings, as rural workers fought for their traditional ways of life to be maintained against the rise of industrialisation. Social division was strictly upheld, the social order ranging from royalty to aristocracy to gentry to the middle and lower classes. A person 'in trade' tended to be stigmatised by the upper classes, whilst the servants, labourers, and poor could only dream to have life be so fine. Yet despite the warfare and social unrest, this was also a time of great achievement in culture and technological advancement, leading to the Britain of today. Regency Slang Regency slang (cant) is something that makes reading a Regency novel so much fun! But much like the phrases used by today's teenagers can prove bewildering to different generations, there can be an element of decoding necessary to understand the idiom of a world from two centuries ago. While some forms of slang can be found in Jane Austen's works, Georgette Heyer is often considered the queen of Regency cant. Although she wrote in the 1930s to 1960s, her exceptional research skills resulted in a vast collection of letters and diaries from that time period, so her use of slang gives a sense of authenticity that makes her novels such a delight to read. S ome examples include: * 'a bag of moonshine' = a lot of nothing * 'doing it much too brown' = to overly exaggerate or lie * 'to cast up one's accounts' = to be sick * 'mutton-headed' & 'buffle-headed' = to be stupid or foolish * 'hoyden' = tomboyish girl * 'a green girl' = an inexperienced and naive young woman * 'leg-shackled' = to be married * 'a diamond of the first water' = an exceptionally beautiful woman * a 'chit' = a (forward) young girl * a 'Bluestocking' = educated, bookish woman * 'the ton' = the highest of high society, usually the aristocracy Lyme Park, Cheshire, used as the inspiration for Pemberley in the wonderful 1995 production of 'Pride and Prejudice' A typical scene in rural England - stone walls and rolling countryside - perfect for a hoydenish young lady, with a hem 'six inches deep in mud' A Regency gentleman had to perfect the art of tying the neckcloth (cravat) - of which existed many styles and variations Click here to visit the page A Day Trip to Bath Click here to visit the Original Six page Click on the link above to learn more about the Original Six series, romance based on players from the Original Six teams of the NHL, including background information, photo and travel inspiration, playlists and more...
