A magnificent, exotic structure used as the Regent's summer holiday residence, for entertaining on a sumptuous scale. Mentioned in 'The Dishonorable Miss DeLancey' ^ 12th Century Church of St Mary & Holy Cross, Alderminster, 4 miles south of Stratford-upon-Avon. During the Regency period, the church helped govern social mores - even if not everybody practiced what was preached. Men of faith, such as William Wilberforce helped change society for the better, such as petitioning for the end of slavery. The Regency Era Th e Regency era refers specifically to the years 1811-1820 when the Prince Regent (later King George IV) was ruling in place of his father, King George III, who was deemed mad and unfit to rule. The Regency is a sub-period of the Georgian era (from 1714-1837, when a series of kings named George ruled England), which preceded the advent of Queen Victoria to the throne in 1837. The Regency era is known for: *the continued wars in the Peninsular against France * for the exploits of the Duke of Wellington * Jane Austen's 'Pride and Prejudice' (published in 1813) * Mary Shelley's 'Frankenstein' (published in 1816) * 'Ivanhoe' by Walter Scott (published in 1819). It was a time of excess (such as the extravagances of the Royal Pavilion in Brighton), adventure and exploration ('Elgin's marbles' - Greek artefacts brought to London by Lord Elgin - were first displayed at the British Museum in 1817), and social upheaval, such as the Luddite uprisings, as rural workers fought for their traditional ways of life to be maintained against the rise of industrialisation. Social division was strictly upheld, the social order ranging from royalty to aristocracy to gentry to the middle and lower classes. A person 'in trade' tended to be stigmatised by the upper classes, whilst the servants, labourers, and poor could only dream to have life be so fine. Yet despite the warfare and social unrest, this was also a time of great achievement in culture and technological advancement, leading to the Britain of today. Regency Slang Regency slang (cant) is something that makes reading a Regency novel so much fun! But much like the phrases used by today's teenagers can prove bewildering to different generations, there can be an element of decoding necessary to understand the idiom of a world from two centuries ago. While some forms of slang can be found in Jane Austen's works, Georgette Heyer is often considered the queen of Regency cant. Although she wrote in the 1930s to 1960s, her exceptional research skills resulted in a vast collection of letters and diaries from that time period, so her use of slang gives a sense of authenticity that makes her novels such a delight to read. S ome examples include: * 'a bag of moonshine' = a lot of nothing * 'doing it much too brown' = to overly exaggerate or lie * 'to cast up one's accounts' = to be sick * 'mutton-headed' & 'buffle-headed' = to be stupid or foolish * 'hoyden' = tomboyish girl * 'a green girl' = an inexperienced and naive young woman * 'leg-shackled' = to be married * 'a diamond of the first water' = an exceptionally beautiful woman * a 'chit' = a (forward) young girl * a 'Bluestocking' = educated, bookish woman * 'the ton' = the highest of high society, usually the aristocracy Lyme Park, Cheshire, used as the inspiration for Pemberley in the wonderful 1995 production of 'Pride and Prejudice' A typical scene in rural England - stone walls and rolling countryside - perfect for a hoydenish young lady, with a hem 'six inches deep in mud' A Regency gentleman had to perfect the art of tying the neckcloth (cravat) - of which existed many styles and variations Click here to visit the page A Day Trip to Bath Click here to visit the Original Six page Click on the link above to learn more about the Original Six series, romance based on players from the Original Six teams of the NHL, including background information, photo and travel inspiration, playlists and more... • The Original Six Romance series | carolynmillerauthor

A Christian contemporary hockey romance series based on the Original Six teams and cities of the NHL, featuring hot hockey players and strong heroines THE ORIGINAL SIX HOCKEY ROMANCE SERIES A sweet & swoony, slightly sporty, Christian contemporary romance series, set in the cities of the original six teams of the NHL Okay, so I'm the first to admit that an Aussie writing a series about ice hockey must seem a little unusual. But ever since watching the Vancouver Winter Olympics in 2010 I'll admit to having a fascination for this sport. And while I'm the first to admit I'm not especially sporty myself, I find the strength and stamina, grit, grace and skills needed for hockey rather awe-inspiring. The first book I wrote (before any of my historicals) I based on a couple I saw entering the closing ceremony of the 2010 Winter Olympics, when I saw an Aussie female athlete holding hands with a US athlete. I was intrigued about how two elite athletes from opposite sides of the world could meet then sustain a relationship. Despite my best efforts, I couldn't find out who they were, so I eventually wrote 'their' story, which is how Love on Ice began. I made her a short track skater (because hello: awesome toughness right there!) and he was a hockey player (bc: tough). Later that year my husband and I had the trip of a lifetime to the US and Canada. We landed in Boston, then drove up the east coast to Canada, as this avid Anne of Green Gables fan insisted we visit Prince Edward Island. From there we drove to Quebec City and Montreal, then across to Muskoka, a picturesque, lake-filled stretch of country two hours north of Toronto, which is where LM Montgomery set her book The Blue Castle . Visiting this beautiful part of the world became inspiration for a story about another hockey player (because: Canada, hello!), which became Muskoka Blue . We then visited Niagara Falls then flew to Chicago, where we were fortunate to catch a Chicago Blackhawks’ game. It was a few years later that I realised these stories could be connected as they were both part of Original Six teams, which includes Boston, Detroit, Chicago, Montreal, New York and Toronto, but I still needed my reason for why these particular players would connect. I prayed, and before too long discovered an online Bible study group for the Boston Bruins, which I knew could be expanded into a group of NHL playing friends. Thus the concept for the Original Six hockey romance series was born. I loved my visits to these cities, and loved incorporating some of the places we visited (such as Montreal’s Jardin Botanique and the Art Institute of Chicago) into the various stories I’ve written in this series. You don't have to love hockey to love these books, as readers tell me they're captivated by the heroes, the depth, and the swoon-worthy kisses. So if you enjoy stories of family, faith, friendship and love then I hope you'll check them out. Hampton Hall’s new owner has the villagers of St. Hampton Heath all aflutter—all except Lavinia Ellison. The reverend’s daughter cares for those who are poor and sick, and the seventh Earl of Hawkesbury definitely does not meet that criteria. His refusal to take his responsibilities seriously, or even darken the door of the church, leave her convinced he is as arrogant and reckless as his brother—his brother who stole the most important person in Lavinia’s world. Nicholas Stamford is shadowed by guilt: his own, his brother’s, the legacy of war. A perfunctory visit to this dreary part of Gloucestershire wasn’t supposed to engage his heart, or his mind. Challenged by Miss Ellison’s fascinating blend of Bluestocking opinions, hoydenish behavior, and angelic singing voice, he finds the impossible becoming possible—he begins to care. But Lavinia’s aloof manner, society’s opposition and his ancestral obligations prove most frustrating, until scandal forces them to get along. Franklin James might be a famous pro hockey player, but just because he's Cassie's older brother doesn't mean she wants to step into the limelight. She's too busy helping her dad run the ranch and managing the ranch's movie set, and negotiating with the giant egos of movie stars like Harrison Woods, who's supposed to be filming the new TV series of As The Heart Draws . And while his TV hero characters might be hugely popular, Harrison's real character seems anything but noble. Cassie is convinced he's hiding something, and that this diva's nice guy moments are just an act. Can she remind him what being a true hero is all about? Pinterest: A Cameo for a Cowgirl He knows this hardworking vet loves his dog, but can she find room in her heart for him, too? She's got a lot on her plate, which means there's no time for a certain dishy teammate of her pro hockey-player brother, despite what others may think. Tom Chavez knows he's in the friend zone, but isn't one to give up too easily, especially when he's concerned that this vet might be working herself into an early grave. So when tragedy strikes the vet practice, he's going to do all he can to show her he's more than just a shoulder to cry on, and that he cares about more than her skills with his dog. Now, instead of applause and acclaim, she’s tucked away in the confines of Three Creek Ranch, struggling to come to terms with a very different future. Who is she when she can no longer do what always gave her purpose? Jake Guillemette is used to being overshadowed by his NHL-playing younger brother. He’s made peace with that—mostly—after an encounter several years ago showed him that he really shouldn’t try to act like someone he’s not, as that only leads to heartache and regrets. When a job opportunity leads him to start afresh somewhere new, he never thought he’d run into the person who made him second-guess everything, but who ultimately led him to become a better man. Horrified, Poppy is desperate to keep their past a secret, and it takes some time to learn to trust this different version of the man she’s long loved to loathe. Can Jake win her trust and prove he’s changed? And will Poppy learn to trust God with all her future? Years later, when her sports career is cut short by injury, she jumps at the chance to be one of Calgary's first female sports reporters. Trouble is, some of the old dinosaurs she works with think she's only there to look good, add ratings, and stir controversy among the fiercely loyal hockey fans. She longs to prove herself, so when an opportunity comes along to interview newly traded defenseman Franklin James, she meets him. Or, more accurately, re-meets him. With disastrous effect. Growing up with three sisters means Franklin thought he knew something about women, but nothing had ever prepared him for the sparkling firecracker that is Hannah. And yet her vibrant personality holds a sweetness and soft side, something that draws his interest and protectiveness when an interview goes south. And there's something about her that's vaguely familiar... Can these two overcome prejudice and find a way forward? And what has faith - or the lack of - got to do with anything? Fire and Ice is a second-chance, forbidden romance and the first book in the new Northwest Ice hockey romance series, a sweet and swoony, slightly sporty, Christian contemporary romance series, perfect for fans of Becky Wade, Courtney Walsh, and Susan May Warren.
